Cindi signed up for a half marathon run in Galveston so we decided to drive the Jeep down. We stayed at The Four Seasons on the Gulf condos. The condo was roomy with 2 bedrooms, big living area, and a full kitchen. We had a free day to hang out in Galveston on Saturday so we decided to undress the Jeep and head across the bay to Crystal Beach, Port Bolivar. To get over to the island we boarded the TXDoT ferry. The wait line was really long with temps climbing while we sat still. Once on the ferry, it was a nice ride across the water to island. We decided to grab a quick bite before hitting the beach. The beach has drive on access with a $10 permit, so we grabbed our permit after lunch and headed to the Gulf.
When we got to the beach we folded back the the sunrider top and headed back toward the ferry docks. About 10 minutes underway the skies began to get rather dark and the wind also shifted from south to north. We noticed the North horizon was disappearing in rain wrap and it looked like we were going to get soaked. Without warning the skies unloaded! We hustled the sunrider back closed and headed for cover. We found an elevated beach house being built so we parked underneath. That was a great plan until rain water started pouring through the floor of the new construction and directly into the Jeep! At this point we decided to head for the road as it seemed the rain was beginning to let up. When we got back out to the main road, the temps had dropped into the mid 60s. Fifty miles per hour in a Jeep with no doors, no top, when rain drenched passengers is really cold! We fired up the heater on high and wrapped up in towels and headed for the ferry. The rain was driving out of the north and blowing through the Jeep as we were driving east to west. We were soaked! When we arrived at the ferry docks, the rain had lightened to a mist. We were wet, cold, and miserable while waiting 45 mins for our ferry exit.
We finally got back to the hotel where I stripped the seat covers off and dressed the Jeep, drying it the best I could. A great memory for sure, but certainly not the drive on the beach we were expecting!
