I currently have an ARB single on-board air compressor mounted under the hood. I was using a Co2 bottle to fill my tires until I mounted my spare on the Expedition Industries Gatekeeper Tire Carrier, and thought it would be cool to put a 40 inch spare in every inch of usable space in the back of the Jeep on the Gatekeeper. Where I had my bottle mounted with the 37 inch spare was going to be out of the equation with the 40. Using the ARB single wasn’t an option with 40s. After doing some research I settled on ditching the Co2 and going with twin Viair 450C compressors. The compressors have a 100% duty cycle and produce really good CFM numbers at moderate pressures such as tire inflation.
While looking at mounting options on the flat portion of side panels in the trunk area, my eye wandered to the bottom of the gussets on the Gatekeeper. The inboard spare tire carrier can be ordered with flanges welded in for plates to be attached to the voids between the center mount, but I opted to order mine clean with no flanges. Well it turns out the under side of the plate gusset on the Gatekeeper is the exact size of the base of the 450C compressor! I held the compressor up and marked the template holes for the compressore mounting bolts, drilled the holes and mounted the pair of compressors, on on each side. I used the switch I had for the ARB and then plumbed the compressors to a 1 gallon buffer tank in the rear cargo area of the Jeep. The install looks amazing and the compressors are absolute monsters when running together.
